‘Informative and a lot of fun’

Comments from Jane Hopkins of Voxcetera

Voxcetera is an ensemble of twelve led by Jane Hopkins

Mark came to one of our rehearsals last year and helped us collectively with vocal technique, particularly breathing, support and posture. Some of us had previously had some vocal tuition and som not, but we all really benefited from it. Mark involved us all, using visual examples and edmonstrating technkques we could practise right away. I particularly liked the fact that he asked us questions relating to our role within the choir which made us think carefully about how we approached our singing and what we thought was important.

He made us feel very relaxed and the exercises he gave us were easy to understand and implement. The before and after singing were testament to the effect his advice had had on our vocal production, with increased volume and a more rounded-supported sound.

Whilst guiding us through the basic areas of vocal technique, he gave us time to ask questions if there were aspects that we weren’t quite sure about, and also to expand on certain areas which were of interest, eg breathing.

There were many ideas which Mark gave me to think about, but two were of particular interest: first the importance of maintaining a relaxed but strong posture, and especially not allowing the jaw to be impeded in any way, and secondly not gripping on to the air as it is released from the body.

To sum up I would say that the session we had with Mark was informative and a lot of fun. It wasn’t at all intimidating, and I would recommend his tutorials to both groups and individuals

Voxcetera performs a cappella or with accompaniment. Its members have worked with various top orchestras including London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic and BBC Symphony.
